BEDFORD-STUYVESANT — A man died after the car he was driving slammed into a retainer wall following an accident with a sport utility vehicle on Atlantic Avenue early Wednesday, officials said.
George Daisley, 32, from Bedford-Stuyvesant, was driving a 2002 GMC Envoy east on Atlantic Avenue toward Ralph Avenue just before 6 a.m. when police said he sped through a red light and struck 61-year-old Ocean Hill resident Edward Clyburn.
Clyburn, who was driving a 1997 Nissan 200SX, careened into a wall supporting the Long Island Rail Road's elevated Atlantic Avenue Terminal station, the FDNY and NYPD said.
"I heard the noise," said Assa Singh, 50, who works in the gas station at the intersection. "It was a big boom."
Clyburn wasn't breathing when emergency medical crews rushed him to Kings County Hospital Center, where he died a short time later, police said.
Daisley was charged with vehicular manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, reckless driving and disobeying a red signal, and was issued a speeding ticket, according to police.
Laquann Fields, 21, Clyburn's grandson, said his grandfather worked as a truck driver for a company in Queens, although he declined to specify which one.
"I didn't expect my grandfather to not come home from work," Fields said, standing outside Clyburn's Ocean Hill home. "He was good to my grandmother."
