Family Mourns Staten Island Father Killed in Hurricane Sandy

By Nicholas Rizzi | November 8, 2012 6:05pm

OAKWOOD — Teary-eyed friends and family packed into St. Charles Roman Catholic Church Thursday to say goodbye to Leonard Montalto, 53, who was found dead in his Oakwood home after Hurricane Sandy.

During the funeral service, Father Antony Das Devadhasan said Montalto made sure that his daughters were safely out of harm's way before the storm, but he got trapped in his basement on Fox Beach Avenue.

"He gave for his daughters to his last breath," Das Devadhasan said.

Montalto's daughters went looking for him after the hurricane and knew something was wrong when they discovered his wallet and two dogs in the house. Montalto was found dead Oct. 31.

Family remembered Montalto as a devoted father who enjoyed playing the guitar, according to SILive.com.

“Lenny was a gentle guy," neighbor Robert English told DNAinfo.com New York. "He walked with his daughter on her paper route each morning, helping her deliver."
