REGO PARK— Students returned to classes in Rego Park Monday as the neighborhood continued to return to normalcy in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.
At P.S. 139 The Rego Park School at 93-06 63rd Dr., parents and children braved cold temperatures as they tried to get back into their daily routines.
"I don't know how they're happy about it, but I'm very thrilled," said one parent, Jose Tavarez, as he walked his sons James and Julian to school. "It wasn't good to be trapped in the house for days."
Mayor Bloomberg canceled all school classes on Oct. 28 as the hurricane barreled throughout the city. School remained closed the remainder of the week as many school buildings continued to house storm evacuees, and over 100 schools were still shuttered as of Monday.
Unlike the Rockaways, which sustained heavy flooding and fire damage, Rego Park and neighboring Forest Hills came away from the storm relatively unscathed, suffering only downed trees and power outages.
Irene Condomanolis, who lives a few blocks away from P.S. 139, said that her son Peter took full advantage of his time off.
"He spent the week playing video games and more video games," said Condomanolis, 38.
