Cops Arrest Suspect for Attempted Murder in McCarren Park

By Meredith Hoffman | October 3, 2012 5:34pm

WILLIAMSBURG — Cops arrested a 22-year-old Wednesday for the attempted murder of a homeless man in McCarren Park, DNAinfo.com has learned.

"We have arrested Disney Cortez for attempted murder of the still-unidentified victim," Deputy Inspector Terence Hurson of the 94th Precinct said.

Cortez allegedly used a beer bottle to attack a homeless man by a picnic bench Tuesday at 4 a.m.

"We found him bleeding from the head and unconscious...on Bedford Avenue next to Dunkin' Donuts," Hurson said of the victim found on the corner with Lorimer Street Tuesday.

"We followed the blood trail into McCarren Park to a bench and discovered a broken beer bottle in a puddle of blood," Hurson said. "We still haven't been able to identify him but he appeared to be homeless," Hurson said of the victim.

The man was taken to Bellevue Hospital for treatment, Hurson said.

The assault — first reported by the blog A Walk in the Park — followed multiple incidents of violence at the park in recent months, including the stabbing of a teen to near-death this July and a string of incidents at McCarren Pool this summer.

Tuesday's attack also came just days after advocates announced they would finally be opening a shelter for Greenpoint's local homeless, who often sleep in McCarren and McGolrick Parks.
