THE BRONX — A pair of West Highland terrier mixes, named Fred and Ginger, are recovering after they were plucked from a trash heap in The Bronx.
The 2-year-old pups were covered with pressure sores and maggots and incapable of standing on their own when a Bronx resident spotted them in a duffel bag next to a pile of trash on Commonwealth Avenue between Bronx River Avenue and Mansion Street.
The resident called the police, who then brought in Animal Care and Control to nurse the pooches back to health.
“AC&C is working with the Bronx DA’s office to try to find out who is responsible for this,” said Julie Bank, executive director of AC&C, which is paying for the dogs’ medical bills through its Special Treatment and Recovery Fund.
“In the meantime, we’re making sure Fred and Ginger receive the best veterinary care possible and are determined to find them a loving home.”
AC&C representatives said the dogs are expected to make a full recovery, although they will need time to gain more weight. They should both be available for adoption within the next few weeks.
