EAST VILLAGE — Part of the wall of an East Village school building is “coming apart,” prompting Department of Education officials to evacuate children from the structure on Monday.

The building, located at 420 E. 12th St., is home to both the Girls Prep Lower East Side Middle School and the East Side Community School.

Marge Feinberg, a spokeswoman for the Department of Education, said that both schools were evacuated after it was determined that there was structural damage to the eastern wall of the building, including a parapet that appeared to be “coming apart.”

The extent of the damage was not immediately clear, and Feinberg said that officials will survey the wall on Tuesday to determine what repairs will be necessary and how long students will need to be relocated off site.

The Department of Buildings did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In the meantime, students at Girls Prep were sent to P.S. 188 at 442 E. Houston St., which already serves some of the school’s lower grades.

And the 560 students at the East Side Community School were sent to P.S. 19, located about a block away on First Avenue in the East Village.

All parents were notified of the evacuation and the situation at the school, Feinberg said.
