EAST HARLEM — An underwater pipe that feeds Randall's Island is leaking fresh water into the East River near East 111th Street, authorities said.

The leak was reported by a passing pedestrian who spotted water bubbling to the surface about 9:30 a.m., officials said.

"The break is stirring up the river bottom, so it might look like sewage, but it's not," FDNY deputy chief Joseph Carlson said.

"You would know if it was sewage," a Department of Environmental Protection worker added.

The  14-inch-wide water main will be left on overnight, Carlson stated, and divers will assess the break Tuesday.

"It's like a water main that breaks on the street, but this is underwater," Carlson said. "A little more difficult to fix."
