THEATER DISTRICT — Sam Shepard knows families — and their dysfunction.

The playwright's most recent effort on the topic, "Heartless," opened at the Pershing Square Signture Center on West 42nd Street Monday night, followed by a party at the same locale.

The play, which takes place in Los Angeles, features Lois Smith as the matriarch of a female-dominated family. This family's secrets spill out throughout the play, deftly revealed as only the Pulitzer Prize-winning Shepard can do.

Cast members Smith, Gary Cole, Betty Gilpin, Julianne Nicholson and Jenny Bacon were feted by Martha Stewart, Julia Stiles, Sherie Rene Smith and more at the premiere.
