One-Armed Bandit Sought for Stealing Package in Queens

By Nigel Chiwaya | August 7, 2012 10:48am

WOODHAVEN — Woodhaven residents are asking for the public's help in finding a one-armed man who was caught on tape swiping a package from the porch of a neighborhood home.

The alleged bandit was caught on a surveillance footage taking a UPS package filled with clothes from a home near 94th Street and 87th Avenue on July 23, according to footage posted online by the Woodhaven Residents' Block Association.

After a UPS driver stopped at the house just before 6 p.m., footage shows the suspect, who appears to be missing his right arm, pulling up across the street in a van.

The suspect then waits seven minutes before getting out of vehicle, walking up to the house and swiping the package, according to the video.

The incident was reported to police, who opened up a petit larceny case.

"This is yet another example of how useful video surveillance cameras can be for our neighborhood," said block association President Edward Wendell in a statement. "Now we need to put this extremely strong evidence to work and make sure this thief gets caught."

Wendell said that the footage has elicited calls from residents who have been the victims of similar thefts.

"Ever since we posted this we've gotten these reports from people who say: 'I've had packages stolen off our porch,'" he said.

Wendell asks that anyone with information on the alleged thief contact the WRBA at 718-296-3735 or info@woodhaven-nyc.org or call the 102nd Precinct at 718-805-3207.
