UPPER EAST SIDE — A fire broke out in a high-rise residential building on East 86th Street early Friday, fire officials said.

Firefighters raced to the 25th floor of 444 East 86th Street just before 6:20 a.m., the FDNY said.

Brian Weld, an 18-year resident of the building, said he smelled smoke about 6:15 a.m., grabbed his wallet, passport, cell phone, before running out of the building.

"When we came down we were surprised how few resident had come out," Weld, who lives on the 23rd floor, said. "After 9/11 my wife and I don't take any chances."

There were no initial reports of injuries, a spokesman said.

Firefighters got the fire under control about 7:45 a.m., officials said.
