High Line Debuts Free Teen-Approved Film Series

CHELSEA — The High Line kicked off a Thursday-night outdoor film series for August with movies that got thumbs up from local teens.

Friends of the High Line, the group that runs the park, reached out to teenagers at nearby Robert Fulton Houses and Chelsea-Elliott Houses to develop a free movie series. The teens picked a set of inspirational movies featuring underdogs and themes of overcoming obstacles.

The free Thursday night screenings will be held on the High Line’s 14th Street Passage.

Aug. 2

7 – 9 p.m.

Audience choice: “Step Up” (2006, starring Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan) or “The Notebook” (2004, starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams)

Friends of High Line asked attendees to vote online, on Facebook and at the High Line Field Station to pick the debut film of the series.

"Step Up" stars Tatum as a vandal doing community service at an art school who discovers dance after meeting a ballet dancer.

"The Notebook" features a couple who fall in love despite their different backgrounds, wealth and disapproval from family.

Aug. 9

7 – 9 p.m.

Real Steel” (2011, starring Hugh Jackman)

A father-son team compete their underdog robot fighter in a futuristic world of professional robot boxing.

Aug. 16

7 – 9 p.m.

Freedom Writers” (2007, starring Hilary Swank)

A young teacher pushes her struggling high school students to write and pursue their education.
