QUEENS — A school bus carrying five young special-education students and two adults overturned at a Briarwood intersection early Monday morning after colliding with a yellow cab, injuring eight people and one seriously, authorities said.
The bus and cab crashed at the intersection of 150th Street and 87th Avenue at about 6:30 a.m., trapping a school attendant inside and leaving her with serious injuries including head trauma, an FDNY spokesman and police source said at the scene.
Police added that the crash occurred as a result of the cabdriver running a traffic light.
Emergency crews had to saw through portion of the bus's roof to rescue the attendant, the police source added. The conditions of the others hurt, including the students, were not immediately known. They were taken to Long Island Jewish hospital for treatment, a Department of Education spokeswoman said.
Police said the students, who attend different schools, were between the ages 5 and 10.
Witnesses told police that the cabdriver was also talking on a cell phone at the time of the crash, cops said. It was not immediately clear if he would face charges.
