COBBLE HILL — Police have amped up speed enforcement on Hicks Street in response to complaints from the community about chronic speeding and too many accidents.
Speeding has always been an issue on Hicks Street, especially headed northbound, and the local 76th Precinct has been without a radar gun to check speeds for at least a month, police sources said.
But on May 16, officers from the 76th Precinct — armed with a new radar gun — visited Hicks Street and handed out eight speeding tickets that day.
"Sometimes people like to use Hicks Street as a service road," said a police source. "When the BQE gets backed up, they use it as an alternative route."
The Department of Transportation also took action last month and installed a speed sign with radar to deter speeders.
Police officers will sporadically visit the area to enforce speeding on that street, the source said.
