NEW YORK — The Bronx Zoo will kick off its Cinco de Mayo celebration and spring programs this weekend with Nickelodeon's cartoon superstars Dora and Diego.

The costumed characters will be at the zoo’s main stage area Saturday and Sunday and visitors will have the opportunity to meet the famous cousins in person.

In the coming weeks, Barney, the beloved purple dinosaur, will host a sing-along on the zoo’s main stage. Spiderman, Ferdinand the Bull and Sportacus from Sprout’s Lazytown are also scheduled to make appearances.

On Saturday, June 2, Academy Award-winning composer Alan Menken will present some of his favorite songs with the Music Unites youth choir of the Women’s Academy of Excellence in The Bronx.

LeVar Burton, host of the TV series “Reading Rainbow,” will host a special storybook reading on Saturday and Sunday, June 16 and 17.

And the Animal Activity Trail, an ongoing offering, will allow children to learn how to move like an animal as they tour the zoo.
