BROOKLYN — A fire broke out at a Con Edison plant in Vinegar Hill Sunday night, sending plumes of thick black smoke into the air near the Manhattan Bridge, authorities said.
The blaze started on a bushing connected to a reactor at the facility, at 89 John St., about 5:15 p.m., Con Ed and FDNY officials said.
No one was injured in the fire.
Firefighters used foam to extinguish the blaze, which produced heavy smoke that could be seen for miles because of burning oil contained in the equipment, officials added.
No Con Ed customers were affected by the fire, a spokesman for the utility said.
The blaze was brought under control at 6:39 p.m., the FDNY said.
