BROOKLYN — A 24-year-old man was shot and killed just down the block from his home in Brownsville late Tuesday, police said.

Dwaine McKenzie was shot in the head in front of 1273 Herkimer St. about 10:15 p.m., cops said. He was rushed to Brookdale Hospital, police said.

McKenzie, who lived just a few doors away on Herkimer Street, died at the hospital, police said.

"He was a good boy," said Theodore Williams, 76, who lives on Herkimer Street.

Cops said they haven't found any witnesses to the shooting.

No one has been arrested.

Williams said he was lying in bed when the shots rang out, erupting on a day when residents were "having fun and stuff."

Williams said McKenzie was an aspiring plumber who was trying to turn his life around after some run-ins with the law. A police source said he had arrests for criminal possession of marijuana and trespassing.
