MANHATTAN - Taxi cab card swipers beware.
Data on up to 10 million Visa and MasterCard credit cards may have been stolen in a massive security breach that may be linked to a New York City taxis and parking garages, according to published reports.
A computer break-in at Global Payments, one of the main credit card processors for taxi and garage transactions was discovered early in March, the company reported.
Global Payments said it notified several credit card companies and the website Krebs on Security said Visa and MasterCard have been warning banks of possible fraud.
The data, which can be used to create fake credit cards, occurred between Jan. 21, 2012 and Feb. 25, 2012, according to the Krebs website.
"Sources at two different major financial institutions said the transactions that most of the cards they analyzed seem to have in common are that they were used in parking garages in and around the New York City area," the site said.
Data was also stolen from taxi transactions, according to financial fraud expert Avivah Litan.
A federal law enforcement source told the New York Post that data from a "significant" volume of credit cards -- up to 10 million accounts -- may have been compromised.
