WILLIAMSBURG — Independence Towers residents got some good news Friday: their gas is being restored.
Residents got a scare last week that they might spend up to one year without gas following an outage at the NYCHA complex on Taylor Street.
"Residents can now trade in their hot plates for home-cooked meals," state Sen. Dan Squadron said of the electric cookers the 122 units' residents received from NYCHA since the outage began Feb. 14. The burners, on top of their meager capacity to cook meals, broke and even caused shocks, residents complained last week.
NYCHA said it turned off the gas when a leak was discovered in the complex's basement, and last week.
At a meeting last Thursday Michael Rosen, Senior Deputy of NYCHA's Mixed Finance Asset Management, promised the process of restoring gas would be expedited to take about 30 more days.
