BROOKLYN — Residents trying to flee a blaze in their Prospect Heights building Tuesday scaled down a fire escape — only to find themselves trapped by flames bursting out of a second-floor window, officials said.
The fire began at 8:12 a.m. at 1154 Pacific Street near Bedford Avenue, officials said.
"A couple of people on the fire escape were coming down right into the fire," said John Rozas, Battalion Chief of Ladder 57. "They were panicking and trying to come down on top of the fire."
Some 60 firefighters battled the blaze for about 30 minutes, officials said.
"We tried to go out the fire escape, but we could see the flames going out of the window," said Gus Renaud, 21.
"Our roommate tried to go out the door, but he couldn't see. We couldn't breathe. We stuck our heads out of the window."
Firefighters managed to get all of the residents out of the building. None of them was hurt, though one firefighter suffered a minor injury, Rozas said.
