Cop Impersonators Flee After Victim Asks for ID, Police Say

By Tom Liddy | February 27, 2012 8:20pm

QUEENS — Whoops.

Two men wanted for impersonating cops in Elmhurst last month fled the scene after the victim demanded to see ID, police said.

The suspects, described only as 30-35 years old, identified themselves as NYPD detectives to the victims at an apartment building on Elmhurst Avenue and Denman Street at 1 p.m. on Jan. 10.

Sources said that the suspects were looking for someone who lived in the apartment, although it was not clear why.

Surveillance footage shows one of the victims letting the men in, but when they were asked for ID, the suspects fled.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).  The public can also submit their tips by logging onto the Crime stoppers website at WWW.NYPDCRIMESTOPPERS.COM or by texting their tips to 274637 (CRIMES) then enter TIP577.
