WASHINGTON HEIGHTS — Looking to adopt a sweet, family friendly dog?
A female pit bull terrier with no tags was found by the superintendent of a building in the basement of a Washington Heights apartment complex on Monday and advocates are hoping to find her a home.
The dog, nicknamed "Olivia," was discovered in a building on 182nd Street and Amsterdam Avenue. She's approximately 6 months old, weighs about 20 pounds and is in good physical condition, according Laura Simpson, an animal advocate who is now housing Olivia.
"She is very friendly and not shy and she is not underweight, so it's a mystery as to why she was abandoned like that," Simpson wrote in an email.
Simpson added that Olivia does not bark, knows how to sit and is friendly with people and other dogs, but she is not housebroken. She is currently housetraining the dog.
Simpson said that dogs and cats are abandoned regularly in Upper Manhattan.
"Unfortunately pets are abandoned in this cruel manner too often," she said. "I wish that [owners] would try to find a good home for these pets. It is against the law, but more than that is is so terrifying and scary for these animals who have done nothing wrong."
