HARLEM — If President Barack Obama doesn't get re-elected, maybe he could try out for American Idol.

Obama crooned the opening lines of Al Green's classic "Let's Stay Together" during a fundraiser at the Apollo Theater in Harlem Thursday night.

The crowd burst out cheering after Obama broke out in song. The president then turned to his aides off stage and said, "Those guys didn't think I would do it. I told you I would do it."

Obama then made reference to the theater's famous tap dancer who would lead performers off stage if things weren't going so well.

"The Sandman did not come out."

But in an effort not to sound too confident in his abilities, Obama made sure to tip his hat to the song's originator, who was performing at the fundraiser.

"Don't worry [Reverend Al Green], I cannot sing like you, but I just wanted to show my appreciation," he said.
