MANHATTAN — Police are searching for an argyle-sweater-sporting man who allegedly broke into a Kips Bay restaurant early Monday and made off with cash and two laptop computers.

The thief broke open a wooden door leading into the basement of Pongal, a vegetarian eatery on Lexington Avenue near East 28th Street, and slipped into the restaurant, police and part-owner Nazeer Ahmed said. One of the stolen laptops was his.

The suspect, who was also wearing a knit cap at the time of the incident, was caught on security tape just before 8 a.m., police said.

The NYPD asked that anyone with information about the crime contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477), or at www.nypdcrimestoppers.com.
