MANHATTAN — A missing Upper East Side toddler was home safe and her babysitter in custody Wednesday night after the woman allegedly went missing with the 17-month-old girl, police said.
Beatriz Rios, 46, of Queens, set off alarms after going missing with her ward, Annabelle Ceria, from the girl's East 101st Street apartment some time after 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, the NYPD said.
The girl's frantic parents reported her missing, and Rios eventually returned to the home approximately eight hours later and was arrested on charges of unlawful imprisonment and child endangerment, police said.
The child was returned in good condition, police added.
Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said Thursday that Rios gave conflicting reports about her whereabouts Wednesday. He said she told police she was in Central Park and that her cell phone got stolen, and also that she got lost in the subway.
Police did not say where Rios had taken the child.
