MANHATTAN CRIMINAL COURT — An East Village sex attack suspect was arraigned Wednesday on charges of attempted rape of a 27-year-old woman.

Prosecutors said Imre Meszesan, 35, of Brooklyn, followed the woman into her East Village apartment and then grabbed her buttocks and pulled her skirt off in her building's stairwell before she screamed and he backed away. The incident occured on Nov. 13 about 1 a.m.

He then tried to shush her by "placing his finger to his lips" and motioning her to be quiet, according to the criminal complaint. He pretended he had a gun before fleeing from the First Avenue building. His entry and exit was captured on the building's surveillance cameras, prosecutors said Wednesday.

Meszescan, a Hungarian citizen, works as a laborer, according to his lawyer. He was also charged with burglary and ordered held on $100,000 bail by Manhattan Criminal Court Judge Abraham Clott.

Prosecutors said he has an open case for public lewdness in Suffolk County.
