MANHATTAN — A mechanic was injured when he was pinned between two cars in Washington Heights Saturday afternoon, authorities and witnesses said.

The man, identified by friends as Diego Madera, 50, was working on a car on Amsterdam Avenue and 168th Street at 12:20 p.m. when it lurched forward, trapping him against another vehicle.

"We heard a big, big cry," said Julian Turbay, 52, who was across the street at the time.

Turbay said that when the car's owner heard Madera screaming, he jumped into the car and put it in reverse, freeing the injured man.

That's when the mechanic fell down onto the ground, witnesses said.

"He was in a lot of pain," Turbay said. "He was conscious, but he wasn't able to speak."

Officials said that Madera was hospitalized with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
