MIDTOWN — A parking attendant was killed Thursday in a freak accident as he was moving a car in a Midtown parking garage.

Denuld Prophete, 64, from Brooklyn, had climbed out of a Ford Explorer he'd been moving at the West 44th Street Edison garage when it began rolling backwards just after 11 p.m. Thursday, police said.

He leapt back in but accidentally pressed the accelerator instead of the brake.

Police said the car smashed into a metal stanchion used for lifting vehicles into elevated parking spots.

Prophete suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

"It's a very sad situation," said an official with the company. He said the company would release a statement about the incident later in the day.
