MANHATTAN — A tour bus traveling from New York City to Washington D.C. crashed in New Jersey Wednesday morning, injuring dozens of passengers and the driver critically, authorities said.

The crash occurred on the New Jersey Turnpike in South Brunswick, N.J., just before noon, after the D.C. Trails coach collided with a tractor-trailer, state police said.

The driver remained in critical condition as of Wednesday night, and another passenger remained in serious condition, authorities said.

Approximately 35 other passengers suffered minor injuries in wreck, with some treated at the scene, police added.

The bus originated in Brooklyn and made a stop in Manhattan before leaving for Washington, D.C., a spokesman for D.C. Trails said.

The cause of the crash is under investigation, authorities said.

The bus company's spokesman added that the veteran driver has a good record on the road.

The wreck, which occurred in the turnpike’s outer lanes, closed southbound traffic while a Medevac helicopter responded to the scene.
