Video Shows Daring Rescue of Man Threatening to Jump from 30 Rock

MIDTOWN — Dramatic new video shows an emergency responder leaping to the rescue of a man who threatened to throw himself off the Top of the Rock last week.

The distraught man, Jorge Ruiz, 23, climbed over the safety glass surrounding the observation deck at 30 Rockefeller Plaza last Wednesday and perched on a ledge 70-stories high.

He remained in the precarious position for over an hour beginning at 3:47 p.m., while rescue workers tried to coax him back.

The 13-second video, released by the NYPD, shows an emergency worker jumping to grab the troubled man after he stood up and appeared to be getting ready to jump.

Ruiz reportedly told police he suffers from schizophrenia and was distraught that a book he wrote was not being published.

He threatened to kill himself twice before, including an attempt from the Stratosphere Tower in Las Vegas, where he lives, the New York Post reported.
