MANHATTAN — Tourists may no longer be able to get a relatively cheap place to stay at the historic and artsy Hotel Chelsea, but the neighborhood still has the most affordable rooms in Manhattan, according to a recent report.
Travel site Cheaphotels.org, an affiliate of Expedia, compiled its budget hotel report ranking New York City's neighborhoods based on their typical price per night for a two-star hotel. The report didn't single out individual hotels, but it said Chelsea's thrifty rooms averaged at $202 a night.
A search of the site Tuesday found The Jane Hotel had a two-star, queen or double bed, double occupancy room for $255 that night.
The Chelsea Inn, which offers rooms with kitchenettes for visitors who want to save money by cooking, offers rooms for $219 a night.
The highest priced rooms in the city are in tourist-heavy Times Square, which will cost visitors an average of $225 a night.
The Hotel Chelsea, long known as a gritty place to stay for visitors watching their wallets, closed to guests late last month.
The building was sold for over $80 million to the developer Joseph Chetrit and is likely to face extensive renovations.
