MANHATTAN — Smoke erupted from a Second Avenue manhole Friday, snarling traffic around 55th Street, FDNY officials said.
The underground fire, caused by a Con Edison transformer, sent smoke into the street at about 10 a.m. Firefighters were still on the scene an hour later.
Nobody was hurt, an FDNY spokesman said.
A Con Ed spokeswoman said a crew was responding to the scene.
