HARLEM — Two kayakers were rescued from the Hudson River Friday afternoon after their boat capsized.

Witnesses said that they saw two people bobbing in the water near a green kayak that had flipped over next to a pier at 145th Street, just after 4 p.m.

"I seen the boat flipped over and people in the water," said John Viust, 48, of The Bronx, who was picniking with his family.

Arriving police divers and rescuers in a helicopter then sprang into action.

"One of the officers went into the water," Viust said. "He went out there and put them in the boat.

"It's serious because that current is strong. I believe that's why they were holding on - if they'd been a little farther out they could have been swallowed up."
