CHELSEA — Smoke erupted from two manholes on Sixth Avenue near 21st Street Monday, prompting firefighters to close down the street at the peak of rush hour.
The underground fire began at 5:11 p.m. Monday, and fire crews worked quickly to close off Sixth Avenue between 21st and 22nd streets as they battled the blaze.
"There was black smoke everywhere. there was a big burst of flames and smoke, and then it started to rumble, like it was going to blow. I ran," said Tiffany Moore.
Fire crews were still on scene an hour later.
