FINANCIAL DISTRICT — The demand for pricey burgers just isn't what it used to be.
The Wall Street Burger Shoppe, which debuted a $175 burger topped with truffles, foie gras and gold flakes in 2008, has closed and filed for bankruptcy, Crain's New York Business reported.
Tanya Dwyer, lawyer for chef and owner Kevin O'Connell, told Crain's the restaurant was losing money. The restaurant owes about $500,000, mostly to its landlord and the state, Crain's reported.
The shop announced its closing July 1 on its Facebook page.
The 52-seat bar and restaurant at 30 Water St. made headlines after introducing its recession-defying Richard Nouveau burger just as the financial crisis was getting underway three years ago.
The 10-ounce Kobe beef patty was 10 times more expensive than anything else on the burger joint's menu and featured aged gruyere, shaved black truffles, foie gras and golden truffle mayonnaise.
The shop offered casual counter seating for the lunch crowd on its ground floor and a retro saloon with a more expensive menu upstairs.
