LOWER EAST SIDE — The ever-expanding Hester Street Fair will stay open on Sunday this weekend, allowing fans of the to enjoy an extra day of al-fresco dining.
The "Sunday Picnic" will feature eats from more than 20 vendors, as well as ping-pong, badminton and live music, to satisfy foodies who have been flocking to the seasonal, Saturday-only fair since it opened last month.
"We really tried to come up with an event that would be fun and chill at the same time," said Hester Street Fair co-founder and TV personality SuChin Pak.
"We want to see if we can still have the feeding frenzy/energy of an all-food festival, but somehow not the insanity. So we came up with a picnic."
Vendors at the Sunday event include pastry chef Shuna Lydon of Bowery newbie Peels; chef Ryan L. Jordan of Clinton Street gastropub the Clerkenwell; Dutch pancake-maker the Pofferjtes Man; Brooklyn Filipino restaurant Purple Yam; and a dessert partnership between ice cream purveyor Adirondack Creamery and Brooklyn Farmacy.
Pak, who estimated that roughly 25,000 people have passed through the fair since it opened a month ago, added that the picnic would offer a toned-down alternative to crush of Saturday action.
"We'll have just as many tables and seating as vendors," she said. "We want people to come, be relaxed, enjoy music and have a lazy Sunday picnic with the most amazing roundup of vendors."
The Hester Street Fair has featured a revolving roster of vendors since debuting in April of last year.
Pak and her fellow organizers hoped to pay tribute to the Lower East Side's culture and history by hearkening back to Hester Street's days as a hub for street peddlers.
The fair runs through October on a tree-lined stretch of Seward Park at the corner Hester and Essex streets.
