MANHATTAN — The city's most fashionably located gas station may soon be replaced by commercial lofts, the New York Observer reported.
The site of the BP gas station located in the heart of SoHo, at the intersection of Houston and Lafayette Streets, could soon be home to a five-to-seven story commercial loft development with luxury retail space, a source told the paper.
A spokesman for CB Richard Ellis, identified by the Observer as the marketer for the retail space, did not immediately return a call for comment.
BP leased the spot, which looks out onto a notoriously racy Calvin Klein billboard and is just a block away from the main SoHo shopping drag, from the Gaseteria petroleum company in 2003, a New Yorker article from the time explained.
Gaseteria had occupied the space for nearly 30 years before that, the article noted.
The Houston Street BP made headlines last June, after it was defaced by protestors responding to the Gulf Coast oil spill.
