MORNINGSIDE HEIGHTS — A savage attack on a woman outside Columbia University ended when the man bolted into the school's campus and was caught by security guards.
Ash Sinha, 28, is accused of jumping on top of a 22-year-old woman at 11.40 p.m. Saturday, punching her in the face, slamming her head into the ground, kicking her and possibly biting her, police said.
After he was arrested, he allegedly kicked a police officer in the face, and smashed medical equipment when he was taken to Harlem Hospital.
The attack happened during a fight between about 20 people at 116th Street and Broadway, police said.
It is not known if any students were involved. University security said nobody was available to comment Sunday.
The victim was heard yelling, "Get him off me!" as the attack took place. It took four university security guards to wrestle him to the ground. They held him until police arrived.
Witnesses said the man was bleeding from the head. They said he was also ranting "something about Obama and Iraq."
The victim suffered swelling to her face and cuts to her knees, but was not taken to the hospital, police said.
Sinha, who lives on West 109th Street, was charged with felony assault on a police officer, criminal mischief and misdemeanor assault.
