UPPER MANHATTAN — The weather is still chilly, but one group is heating things up in Northern Manhattan with its calendar of hula hooping events for the spring and summer.

After a successful year of programs in 2010, Inwood Hoops, the Inwood all-things-hula-hoop-related company, announced it plans to bring back its popular "Hoop Jams" to Inwood Hill Park beginning Sunday, April 3, and will expand to Washington Heights in June, with locations announced soon.

The group, started by Inwood resident Zaida Grunes and her son Ryan McPartland, has also begun collaborating with longtime athletics director Dave Crenshaw to bring hooping events to area kids and parents at their schools in Inwood and Washington Heights.

"We’re so excited to really connect with new kids and families up here," said Karen Brown, team leader for Inwood Hoops, which celebrated its first year anniversary on Monday, March 28.

Dates and times for Inwood Hoops events are listed on the Upper Manhattan Experience calendar, an online group that hosts events located in Washington Heights and Inwood.

Hoops of all sizes are available for purchase or to borrow at each "Hoop Jam."
