MURRAY HILL — A forklift delivering goods to a hardware store became stuck after one of its wheels broke through a sidewalk door on 29th Street on Monday morning, FDNY officials said.

The forklift was driving on the sidewalk at the northeast corner of 29th Street and Third Avenue around 8 a.m. when one of his wheels broke through the basement door to Bistango Ristorante, the operator said.

"I should have been smarter," the forklift operator, who refused to give his name, admitted. "I never should have been on the sidewalk."

No one was injured during the incident, the FDNY said. The forklift operator was not issued a ticket.

The hole was covered up with a wooden palette and roped off as of 10 a.m. Monday.

The forklift operator was making a delivery to Nuthouse Hardware at 202 E. 29th Street, which is located across the street from the restaurant.

A worker at the hardware store said they planned to work something out with the restaurant's owner to repair the damage done by the forklift. The restaurant was closed at the time of the incident and could not be reached for comment.
