MANHATTAN — The NYPD did its part to put more money in the city's coffers when it issued more than 6,200 tickets in 24 hours to drivers talking on handheld cell phones, NY1 reported.
Drivers caught gabbing on their cell phones were issued tickets that carried a $100 fine. Last month a new law went into effect that would also add a two point penalty to a driver's license for using a cell phone while behind the wheel.
The NYPD cell phone crackdown began in all five boroughs at midnight on Tuesday and ended Wednesday at midnight.
Last year, the department issued just 611 tickets to drivers caught talking on their cell phones, according to police.
