MEATPACKING DISTRICT — The Meatpacking District had all the ambiance of a landfill early Wednesday morning after a tractor-trailer flipped over and spilled dozens of bags full of smelly garbage in front of the 14th Street Park.
The truck was traveling north on the West Side Highway before it overturned while attempting to make a right turn onto 14th Street at around 5 a.m., police said. The tractor-trailer destroyed a section of fence and dumped a significant amount of household trash on the south side of the park.
Police said the driver of the privately owned garbage truck was taken to a hospital with minor injuries. He was not issued any citations, but an investigation was still in progress, police said.
The FDNY responded to the scene and removed all the gasoline from the trucks fuel tank, according to the NYPD. No fuel was spilled during the accident.
A small section of 14th Street between the West Side Highway and 10th Avenue was closed down for several hours until the truck was turned back over and removed around 8:30 a.m.
