MANHATTAN — Exploding manholes forced Hudson Heights residents to evacuate their homes after a hike in carbon monoxide Monday.

Firefighters responded to calls of manhole fires at Bennett Avenue and West 181st Street at 8:29 p.m. and had the flare-up under control minutes later.

Residents were then allowed to return to their homes.

The fires affected several buildings, including 24, 44, and 64 Bennett Avenue, and the force of the explosion reportedly shattered the glass on a first-floor apartment.

A car was covered in dust after a manhole exploded beneath it, witnesses said.

No one was injured in the incident, according to the FDNY.
