GREENWICH VILLAGE — NYU may have scrapped plans to build a fourth tower at the landmark-protected Silver Towers complex, but that hasn't stopped the University from proposing to build a new dog run and toddler playground in the surrounding space, according to Curbed.
Matt Urbanski of Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates presented the mock-ups at a Community Board 2 meeting Monday night, yet according to the blog, residents were not impressed with the plans.
The designs are somewhat different from the plan proposed in 1966. Originally, the plan only included some greenery along West Houston Street, but that has since changed to include a playground with a sand pit, tall fences, lamps and a dog run, the blog reported.
The residents who opposed the plan also wondered what I.M. Pei thinks about the changes, according to Curbed.
The architect ultimately rejected the proposed 400-foot fourth tower for the Silver Towers complex — which he designed — calling it "profoundly destructive" of the landmarked site.
