MIDTOWN — A broken construction crane hovered above Midtown traffic near the Empire State Building after freezing to a halt Tuesday morning.

The stalled crane caused traffic congestion on 34th Street as its boom hovered nearly 90 feet in the air, according to the Office of Emergency Management.

The crane experienced an electrical malfunction which prevented it from being lowered, according to the Department of Buildings. It had been moving heating and air conditioning equipment, but was not carrying a payload at the time of the stall and did not pose a danger of falling, the DOB said.

Traffic was limited to one lane as drivers were diverted around the crane.
