MANHATTAN — Alternate side parking has been suspended through Saturday to help with the Department of Sanitation's efforts to collect garbage that piled up during last week's blizzard, according to the Department of Transportation.

The parking rules will have been suspended for two straight weeks by Saturday, thanks to the blizzard.

Mounds of garbage piled up on city streets as the Department of Sanitation suspended collection so workers could instead focus their attention on snow removal.

"A big chunk of the sanitation department is back cleaning up the piles of garbage that just had to pile up during the week because we were plowing," Mayor Michael Bloomberg told reporters during a press conference in Brooklyn on Monday.

"It will take a few days to catch up, but they're out there today. And hopefully in the next three to four days it will all be done."
