MANHATTAN — Rapper Lil' Wayne was released from Rikers Island Thursday morning after serving eight months in jail on weapons charges.

The Department of Correction said on its website that the Grammy-winning artist, whose real name is Dwayne Carter, was out of jail.

"aaaaaaahhhhhhmmmmm baaaaakkkkkkkkkk," Lil Wayne tweeted Thursday afternoon.

Earlier in the week, officials said they planned to take Lil' Wayne off Rikers in a private Correction bus.

Twitter was abuzz with news of the release of the rapper, also known as Weezy.

"FREE AT LAST!!!!!!!" wrote Cortez Bryant, the rapper's manager.

"Today is the day Lil Wayne gets ot of jail! Grab that purple drank and celebrate!" tweeted McJoy.

Lil' Wayne spoke to fans while in jail through a website weezythanxyou.com.  The site was down Thursday morning.

Lil' Wayne was sentenced to a year in jail earlier this year after pleading guilty to gun charges stemming from an incident in 2007 where a gun was found on his tour bus. He served only eight months of the sentence.

While he was on Rikers, his newest album "I Am Not a Human Being" was released.  It was No. 1 on the charts for a week last month.
