Manhattan - New York's subway system will virtually grind to a halt this weekend with the worst disruption ever seen leaving some lines completely shut down.

On almost every line, trains will skip stations, run on different routes or crawl at incredibly slow speeds, according to the Daily News.

Many straphangers will be herded above ground to make their journeys on shuttle buses - with the largest shuttle operation ever putting 600 buses into service.

The snarl-ups will affect 18 of the 19 lines which have regular weekend service. It's being blamed on construction work - an escalation of a problem which is the bane of travelers almost every weekend.

The 1 line will be hardest hit - with no trains at all.

Construction is set to cause some of the worst subway disruption ever this weekend.

"What? It's not running at all?" shocked Upper West Sider Shannon Barness, 23, asked the Daily News.

"I don't know what I'm going to do. They keep hiking up fares, but it seems like every weekend there is some issue."

Service on the 1 line will be replaced by shuttle buses, said the News.

"It's frustrating, but I'll have to figure it out," Jerry Perez, 20, told the paper as he planned his trip downtown from Washington Heights.

Gene Russinoff, of the Straphanger Campaign, told the News, "Two of the scariest words to city subway riders are 'shuttle bus.'

"Transit officials will have many challenges this weekend, from providing enough alternative bus service on disrupted lines to informing riders which bus to get on."
