MANHATTAN SUPREME COURT — The owner of a bail bond company with offices throughout New York was sentenced to 10 days community service Tuesday after pleading guilty on a weapons charge.
The bondsman, George Zouvelos, 42, was arrested after a scuffle outside his Baxter Street office, located behind 100 Centre Street (the main Manhattan criminal courthouse) in 2008.
He allegedly smacked an unidentified victim in the head with a black handgun, which he was not licensed to have.
He was allowed to plead guilty in July to fourth-degree weapons possession of an unloaded shotgun, and obstruction of government administration for ignoring police officers' orders.
Zouvelos was initially facing several counts of assault and other serious charges, his lawyer said.
Storch said prosecutors and reviewed the case and consented to Zouvelos' plea to two of the least serious charges. Both the District Attorney and the judge consented to the misdemeanor plea, said the attorney, Oliver Storch.
As a misdemeanor offender, Zouvelos, owner of Spartan Bail Bonds, will be allowed to continue issuing bail bonds in New York State, Storch said.
