UPPER MANHATTAN — After a stretch of 90-plus degree days that have left New Yorkers seeking refuge near air conditioners, residents in Upper Manhattan reported a brownout late Thursday night.
Rich Herrera, an Inwood resident, said the brownout occurred about 10:50 p.m. and lasted less than a minute, causing his air conditioning unit and television to drop in voltage.
“I'm hyper aware because of my computer gear,” he wrote in an e-mail.
A Con Edison spokeswoman said the utility company did have two feeders, which operate like circuit breakers, go offline, but said they were immediately replaced by back-up systems.
The power company did not hear reports of outages, but said they did receive one call from a Washington Heights customer complaining of flickering lights.
In Washington Heights, Twitter user MyUrbanDecay tweeted about 10:52 p.m, "looks like we had a small brownout here."
In a direct message to DNAinfo on Friday morning, he wrote,
“the street lights sometimes blackout or dim when this happens,” adding that he "“noticed it because ACs here freak out.”
