MIDTOWN WEST — A Con Edison worker was rushed to the hospital after falling off a ladder while working below street level in Midtown Friday, the FDNY said.

The worker fell about 15 feet into a Con Ed vault — where wiring and other equipment are stored underground — breaking his ankle, a FDNY spokesman said. The incident happened below the sidewalk in front of the Time Warner Center entrance on West 58 Street, between Eigth and Ninth avenues.

The fire department arrived on the scene shortly after the accident around 11:40 a.m. Emergency responders climbed down to the vault and brought the man up on stretcher.

The man is reportedly in stable condition at New York Cornell Hospital.

Emergency responders go below ground to retrieve an injured Con Edison worker on Friday, July 9, 2010.
